The medina will get you lost, and that's fine

The old city's alleys don't follow a usable grid and mapping apps struggle inside them. Note a landmark near your riad, keep the Koutoubia minaret in mind as a reference, and accept that getting lost is part of it.

Young men offering to guide you to a tannery or a market will expect payment and often lead somewhere other than where you asked. A polite firm no works; following is how people end up somewhere unplanned paying to leave.

Jemaa el-Fnaa transforms after dark

The main square is a fairly ordinary open space by day and becomes food stalls, musicians, and crowds in the evening. Go at both times — they're different places. Anyone who puts an animal or an instrument in your hands will ask for money.

Haggling is the norm, and it should be good-humoured

Prices in the souks are expected to be negotiated. Decide what something is worth to you, offer well below, settle somewhere in the middle, and don't start unless you intend to buy.

Escape the intensity deliberately

The Jardin Majorelle, the Bahia Palace, and a riad courtyard are the calm counterweights. Book Majorelle ahead — it's timed entry and extremely popular.

Practicalities

Dress modestly. Carry small cash. Summer heat is extreme.
