Using this list

Ten of Mexico City's landmark experiences as a checklist — the historic centre, the museums, Coyoacán, and the pyramids outside the city. CDMX is enormous and rewards depth over speed.

Two museums are worth planning around

The Museo Nacional de Antropología is one of the great museums anywhere and needs at least half a day — the Aztec and Maya halls alone justify the trip. The Frida Kahlo Museum in Coyoacán sells timed tickets online and regularly sells out days ahead, which is the single most common miss for visitors.

Teotihuacán is a day trip, done early

The pyramids are about an hour from the city. Go at opening to avoid both the heat and the crowds. Climbing access to individual structures has varied over recent years, so check what's currently permitted rather than assuming.

Neighbourhoods reward wandering

Roma and Condesa for food, architecture, and parks; Coyoacán for the colonial centre and markets; the Centro Histórico for the Zócalo, the cathedral, and Bellas Artes. Xochimilco's canals are best with a group and a boat, in the afternoon.

Altitude and air

The city sits at around 2,240 metres. Expect to be short of breath for a day or two and to feel alcohol more strongly. Take the first day gently.

Practicalities

The food is a highlight — busy stalls with turnover are the reliable ones. Use ride-hailing rather than hailing taxis on the street. Take the usual precautions with valuables in crowds and on the metro.

Timing

Run it plain, or add due dates from your arrival date.
