Using this list

Ten of Prague's landmark sights as a tickable checklist. The historic core is compact and almost entirely walkable, which makes this one of the more achievable city lists — most visitors get through it in three days.

Go early, genuinely early

Prague's centre is one of the most visited in Europe and the difference between eight in the morning and midday is enormous. Charles Bridge at sunrise is nearly empty and is the version of the city that ends up on postcards; by eleven it's shoulder to shoulder.

The same applies to the Astronomical Clock, where the hourly show draws a crowd disproportionate to the spectacle.

Prague Castle takes longer than expected

It's a complex rather than a building — St Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace, Golden Lane and more — with several ticket combinations covering different subsets. Decide which parts you want before you're at the counter. Allow half a day, and note the walk up is steep.

Cross the river

Malá Strana and Petřín Hill on the castle side are quieter than the Old Town and worth a full afternoon. The funicular saves the climb.

Practicalities

The currency is the Czech koruna, not the euro; places that accept euros use poor rates. Avoid changing money at street kiosks advertising zero commission. Trams are excellent and cheap.

Run it plain, or add due dates from your arrival date to spread it across your stay.
