Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf both depend on cloud

Both are frequently obscured, and the view is the entire point. Watch the forecast and go on the clearest morning rather than the day you'd planned. Early is better for both light and crowds, and tickets for Corcovado are timed.

If you can only do one on a marginal day, Sugarloaf's two-stage cable car gives you a partial experience even in imperfect conditions.

The beaches are social spaces, not just sand

Copacabana and Ipanema are where the city spends its weekends. Take almost nothing with you — enough cash for a drink, and leave the phone and the watch at the accommodation. This is standard local practice, not paranoia.
