Using this template will create a new list with all the items shown above. You can rename the list, and optionally add due dates counted from a start date you choose.

Who this is for

13 tasks covering a house move end to end — sorting, packing, movers, address changes, utilities, and the first days in the new place. Moving is unusual among big projects in that almost all of it is deadline-driven by a date you don't control, which is why the sequencing matters more than the effort.

Declutter before you pack, not after

Every item you keep gets handled three times: packed, carried, unpacked. Deciding what goes is far cheaper before it's in a box, and moving day is the single best forcing function you'll ever get for it. If you haven't used it since the last move, it doesn't need this one. The Home Decluttering Project covers this properly if you want the longer version.

Change of address is a longer list than you remember

Bank, employer, doctor, dentist, insurance, driving licence, subscriptions, anything that renews annually. Set up mail forwarding regardless — it's the safety net for the ones you'll forget, and you will forget several.

Utilities on both ends, with meter readings

Photograph the meters at the old place on the day you leave and the new one on the day you arrive. That photograph settles billing disputes that are otherwise your word against an estimate.

Pack a first-night box and keep it with you

Bedding, toiletries, chargers, medication, a kettle, something to eat, tools to reassemble a bed. It should travel in your car, not the van. Arriving at eleven at night to search thirty identical boxes is the classic avoidable misery of moving day.

Timing

Turn on due dates and set the start six to eight weeks before completion.
