Who this is for

14 tasks for planning a driving trip — route, vehicle preparation, accommodation, budget, and what to carry. Road trips reward planning differently from other travel: the constraint isn't booking availability, it's how much driving a day you can do before the trip stops being enjoyable.

Plan shorter days than you think

The reliable error is looking at a map, seeing six hours, and treating it as six hours. With stops, fuel, food, traffic, and the photograph you'll want to take, six hours of driving is most of a day and leaves nobody keen to explore at the other end.

Four to five hours of actual driving is a comfortable day. Anything beyond that, plan as a driving day and don't schedule anything at the destination.

Service the car before, not during

The vehicle tasks matter in proportion to how remote the route is. Tyres including the spare, oil, coolant, brakes, wipers. A breakdown two hours from anywhere is a different problem from one at home, and the fix is a check that takes twenty minutes.

Know what your breakdown cover actually includes — recovery to home versus recovery to the nearest garage is a meaningful difference on a long route.

Book the ends, improvise the middle

First and last nights booked, the rest flexible if the season allows it. That combination gives certainty where you're tired and freedom where you're curious. In peak season or remote areas, book everything — options run out.

Offline maps, offline music, and a paper backup for the route. Signal disappears in exactly the places where you most need directions.

Timing

Two to four weeks of preparation. Add due dates if the vehicle needs servicing booked in.
